Consecration Sunday: Step Up 5

By: Pastor Kyle Reinhiller

This Sunday is our Consecration Sunday! This month you have heard testimonies from people who have connected with God through the ministry of Harrisburg UMC. This week, the sermon will be an exploration of 1 Corinthians: 13. We will have one worship service at 10 AM with lunch following worship.
This year's Consecration Sunday has a twist– we have encouraged during the month to step up 5 dollars a week in giving to the Harrisburg UMC mission. So, for example, if a family gave $1,000 a year to the church, they will be asked to pray and step up five dollars a week. That is equal to the cost of a fancy coffee at Lava's Javas. So at the end of the year, the family's giving would be $1260. So look at what you gave at the end of the year, talk, and pray about whether you will step up five for the church's mission.
The mission of the Harrisburg UMC is to love God and love others. Our vision is to connect God's word in our lives so we can grow in our love for God and others together. When you give to the Harrisburg UMC, you are supporting the mission of connecting God's word to life.
The mission is vital because people who do not grow in love with God, or others, live like hell—trapped in selfishness, foolishness, hurting and hurting other people, haters of good, and wasting their lives. We need a savior to save us from that trap. We need to connect with the good news of Jesus Christ, who died and rose again to give us a new way of living. A life that is God and other-centered is wise, blessed, and a blessing. It is a life that loves good and is filled with purpose. Charles Wesley wrote the why of our mission in that last verse of, "O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing" which is "In Christ, your head, you then shall know, shall feel your sins forgiven; anticipate your heaven below, and own that love is heaven." Growing in love with God and others is heaven. And helping people experience the blessing of love for God and others is our mission.
